Meet The People Who Care About Our Home - Mary

Mary (Mekhrangiz) Mukhtorova

Mary has been living at The Fairview since 2011 with her family. While she may be a fresh face, you’ve probably seen her in the neighborhood walking her Miniature Schnauzer, who tends to be a little bit on the vocal side.

While Mary may look young, she has been involved in management and project planning for over a decade, working for an artist in Brooklyn. Her official title is Executive Assistant and Studio Manager, but she handles everything from actual painting to delicate tasks like approving contracts on behalf of her employer. She oversees three full-time employees and two part-time contractors, managing their time and day-to-day tasks to ensure the business runs smoothly and efficiently.

Mary is also a polyglot, speaking English, Russian, Uzbek, Tajik, and having a basic understanding of Spanish and Japanese.

Over the years, Mary has been unhappy with what has become of The Fairview. The lack of communication from the board and the hostility among members is very concerning. As representatives of our community, Mary believes the board needs to be able to compromise rather than ostracize, and must be more efficient and open in engaging with shareholders.

As a resident who wishes the best for The Fairview long term, if elected to the board, Mary plans on utilizing her skills to help the board stay on track with projects while also streamlining relevant information to shareholders in a timely fashion.

Mary asks to please consider making The Fairview a hospitable and comfortable community rather than focusing solely on financial gains. The property has been crumbling for years with slow-paced attention to repairs, which have cost The Fairview money in fines.

Meet The People Who Care About Our Home - Allan

Allan O’Hare

Allan has been a member of the Fairview Board of Directors since November 2023. Allan says that the best thing about being on the board has been meeting and talking with so many of our shareholders. He has learned so much about the spirit and potential of our community by listening to all of you. Allen has run a business in NYC for 26 years that specializes in international communication. If there is one thing that he has learned over all of those years it is that honest and clear communication is the key to building trust and avoiding rumors, innuendo, and fear.

Allan shared that the most troubling thing about being on this board is seeing our board majority work so hard to stifle meaningful communication and debate. Watching them put in place a 3 member Executive Committee to shut out board members they disagree with. Depriving our shareholders of the full board they voted for, while the building that’s our home continues to suffer.

Allan believes that we need a board that will make decisions about our community’s future by listening to our shareholders and acting in a fiscally responsible fashion to address our many needs. We badly need change from the current board that acts secretively, refuses to engage directly with the owners who elected them, and has acted irresponsibly in managing our building’s infrastructure and our coop’s needs. Allan urges everyone who wants a better Fairview to vote for a new board that shares his vision.

Meet The People Who Care About Our Home - Debbie

Debbie Pares

Debbie has been a resident at Fairview for over 12 years. She has decided to run for a seat on the Board of Directors because this is her home and, as such, she wants to see it maintained and managed appropriately.

Debbie mentions that unfortunately this has not been the case for the last couple of years with lack of transparency, assessments, failure of security and the current board majority shutting out our rightfully elected representatives simply because they refuse to agree to tow the line and instead have chosen to fight for the betterment of the ENTIRE Fairview community. She believes this is something that ALL elected board members should aspire to.

Debbie says that it is past time for a change and time to bring on a new board. As a social worker she is always entrusted to maintain confidentiality and there are many skills that she has that are useful in the roll of a board member: she knows how to listen, how to ask questions, how to evaluate information, listen to what is said, and what is not said before making decisions.

Debbie knows the importance of communication and acknowledging people rather than ignoring their questions and concerns. She says that while she will not have all the answers or many will not always like the the answers she has, Debbie will not ignore you and she will represent ALL Fairview Shareholders.

Debbie believes it's time to vote in a new board and bring about the change needed here at the Fairview.

Meet The People Who Care About Our Home - Sheila

Sheila Williams

Sheila is a NYC Department of Finance manager who will bring to the Fairview board 20 years of government experience, overseeing physical plant maintenance, health and safety regulations, fire safety, building renovations, security, management, staff training, and working with budgets.

For more than two decades, Sheila have been responsible for maintaining over 1,000,000 ft.² of space in 14 buildings located throughout the five boroughs. Her duties include making sure they get the highest quality of service from vendors and training staff on rules and laws.

While a big part of Sheila’s job is working with landlords and contractors, she enjoys the challenge of juggling multimillion dollar construction projects with day-to-day operations. Most recently, her team was responsible for the renovation of the Queens Business Center located in Jamaica. All renovations were accomplished in a manner that allowed the facility to remain fully functional and always serving the public in a safe environment. Currently Sheila’s team is responsible for the design and construction of 40,000 ft.² of bare space for a new Business Center in Staten Island. She hopes to parlay the leadership, building operations and network of contacts to help The Fairview.

Sheila says this co-op is where she plans to enjoy her retirement one day, so she is invested in the Fairview’s growth and improvement. If elected to the board, Sheila’s goal would be to develop clear and understandable communications with shareholders, highlighting issues with an explanation of why decisions are made based on available options that are determined by our budget or conditions. She would to assess the needs of The Fairview and help issue a plan to prioritize spending. For example any structural problems should be identified and addressed before they get worse. Sheila would also share with residents, the decision-making process on such plans.

Meet The People Who Care About Our Home - Ellen

Ellen Yan

hinking out of the box, working with best practices and holding people accountable — these are skills Ellen has applied to Fairview and her career as an award-winning reporter who has worked for the New York Times, Newsday and Los Angeles Times.

Ellen takes the board position seriously by acting on shareholders’ concerns. On the slow pace of repairs, her suggestion of contract penalties for missing deadlines was approved by the board.

Over the past few months, she kept insisting on getting larger washing machines favored by shareholders — the laundry company agreed. To bring in money, Ellen pursued a tip from her sources and worked with management to win a competitive, $20,000 film contract at our pool.

Common sense guides her. Ellen believes we need a comprehensive plan to avoid misspending. Balcony repairs and flood prevention must be addressed first, before hallway/lobby redesign and surveillance cameras on every floor. Finding new revenue and benefits, such as free, energy-efficient light bulbs for apartments, will be a relief for shareholders’ wallets. Ellen believes that a collaborative, competent board can turn Fairview back into a home we cherish.
